Beat the Bloodsuckers: Mosquito Control Awareness Week 2017

As you can imagine for an outdoor mosquito control company, summer is a very busy time around our office. However, for one week each year we take some time to step back and really focus on the reason we do what we do: the importance of mosquito control and educating the public.

This year National Mosquito Control Awareness Week (MCAW) was June 25-July 1. MCAW is a time to educate the general public about the significance of mosquitoes in daily life and the important services provided by mosquito control workers. Mosquito Control Awareness Week is close to our hearts here at Mosquito Joe for obvious reasons.

Our franchisees spend a lot of time out in their local communities, spreading awareness of the importance of mosquito control and the services Mosquito Joe provides. Not only are these bugs a nuisance that can ruin your summer fun, but they pose serious health risks such as Zika, West Nile, and EEE. While we work all year long towards these efforts, a designated week such as this really shines the spotlight on professional mosquito control and why we need it.

Giving Back

By far, the biggest part of the week, and the one we most look forward to, is giving back as a company. For the fifth year, Mosquito Joe locations across the country partnered with local blood donation centers for our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. For every new customer that signed up for mosquito control services during Mosquito Control Awareness Week, we donated 10% of the sale to those local blood banks.

This year we also offered a new partnership with Nothing But Nets alongside our traditional local blood bank partnerships. Since 2006, Nothing But Nets has raised more than $45 million, delivering more than 7 million bed nets to protect families in Sub-Saharan Africa from malaria. A mosquito net sent to someone in need is $10, so for each new customer who signed up during Mosquito Control Awareness Week, we contributed $10 to represent a net.

Our franchise owners were able to choose whether their philanthropic efforts that week went towards a local blood bank or to Nothing But Nets. This year we had the privilege of partnering with twenty two blood banks across the country. This money will go towards the amazing work these organizations do in saving lives and emergency assistance. Because of our new customers, we were also able to donate over $6,353 in just one week to local blood centers. Franchisees who partnered with Nothing But Nets donated $13,774 to the organization, supplying 1,377 life-saving nets to those in need.

Mosquito Joe was identified by independent franchisee satisfaction research firm, Franchise Business Review, as being one of only 80 franchises to qualify for its Top Low-Cost Franchises list. Brands on the list had to have a high franchisee satisfaction rating and an investment of under $100,000 at the time their franchisees participated in Franchise Business Review’s franchisee satisfaction survey.

Franchise Gator named Mosquito Joe a Fastest Growing Franchise for 2017 in conjunction with the release of its annual Top 100 list. The online franchise directory developed the rankings to help prospective franchisees identify top opportunities with strong growth potential that are also affordable investments for the average franchise buyer.

For 2017, Franchise Gator selected 50 Top Emerging concepts and 100 Fastest Growing concepts. Top Emerging franchises are identified as rising concepts with 60 or fewer units. Fastest Growing franchises are those experiencing rapid expansion heading into the new year. Mosquito Joe Ranks 26th on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500

We got some great news this week that has 2017 off to a fantastic start. We are thrilled to announce that Mosquito Joe ranks #26 overall AND #1 in the Pest Control category on Entrepreneur’s 2017 Franchise 500! The Franchise 500 is the “first, best, and most comprehensive franchise ranking in the world,” and we are grateful and honored to be recognized so highly among such a distinguished group of businesses.

So, how is the Franchise 500 ranking created? Back in July of 2016, Entrepreneur reached out to franchisors across the country and asked each to fill out an online form and submit their Franchise Disclosure Document. After receiving 988 submissions, Entrepreneur’s editorial team began reviewing each one for certain data points. The franchisors were scored based on more than 150 of these points, and the 500 companies with the highest overall score were ranked as the Franchise 500.

Entrepreneur uses a formula of certain factors to determine the ranking: The Five Pillars of the Franchise 500. These Five Pillars include Costs & Fees, Size & Growth, Support, Brand Strength, and Financial Strength & Stability. Within those pillars are more specific factors such as growth rate, total investment, and financing availability. Throughout the 38 years of the Franchise 500’s existence, Entrepreneur has modified these factors to reflect what is most important to the franchising world at that time. For example, social media presence has become a factor as it gains increasing marketing importance. All companies, regardless of size, are judged by the same criteria to make the final ranking as objective as possible.

2016 was an amazing year for Mosquito Joe. We grew from 113 territories open and 220 territories sold in 2015 to 171 territories open and 278 sold in 2016. Our 127 franchise owners are the heart of our business and help fuel our success each and every day. But we’re just getting started! Mosquito Joe Makes Inc 5000 List

Mosquito Joe sold its first franchise in early 2013 and ever since, it’s been charging forward full throttle. We now have 169 territories open across 27 states. All that growth in just four years has definitely made the time fly for us. We have been very busy hosting prospective franchisees, training new franchisees, and supporting our Mosquito Joe locations as they launch and grow their businesses. As busy as we’ve been, in the middle of what we like to call “happy chaos,” it is easy for us to forget to take a step back and acknowledge the progress and milestones we’re reaching along the way.

That said, recently we ran face-first into a really exciting accomplishment that made us step back and really be proud of our company’s growth and success in our first year of franchising. Last week it was announced that Mosquito Joe made the 128 spot in Inc. 5000’s list of Fastest Growing Private Companies in America. That’s right, we made the top 3% of the list and we couldn’t be more proud!

Mosquito Joe Makes List of Entrepreneur Magazine’s Fastest Growing Franchises

As we’ve said again and again on this blog, Mosquito Joe has experienced amazing growth as a franchise within the last couple of years.  Just four years ago, we were a small mosquito control business with one location in Virginia.  At the end of 2015, we had 113 territories open in 26 states with dozens of franchise owners.  It’s easy for us to brag about our accomplishments, but it means a bit more when one of the nation’s leading business magazines recognizes them as well.  We are very excited to be on Entrepreneur Magazine’s list of Fastest Growing Franchises in 2016!

The list ranks 105 companies around the country from a variety of industries that are making a name in the franchise game.  Mosquito Joe placed 40th on the list, accompanied by big-name brands like Subway, Dunkin’ Donuts, Supercuts, Rooter-Man, and many more.  Entrepreneur spoke with the CEOs and managers of the franchises ranked to find out their secret to success.  Across the board, franchises with a sustainable growth rate invest a lot of time into people; their franchise owners, staff, and customers.  Building a great network of people around a business is the key: “Take care of people, and the numbers take care of themselves.”
