Beat the Bloodsuckers: Mosquito Control Awareness Week 2018

Each year Mosquito Joe recognizes the importance of Mosquito Control Awareness Week through our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Our goal is to raise awareness in the communities in which we operate about the importance of mosquito control and the amazing work of non-profits like blood banks and Nothing But Nets. Although this week falls during one of our busiest months of the year, it does not stop our passionate franchisees from giving back in their communities. This year, National Mosquito Control Awareness Week (MCAW), recognized by the American Mosquito Control Association, fell on June 24th – June 30th, and it was a memorable week for Mosquito Joe.

Mosquitoes date back to over 100 million years, which means they’re not going anywhere anytime soon so it’s important to protect your families and furry friends. Not only are they nuisances who ruin your outdoor fun, but they can transmit dangerous diseases such as Zika, West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The diseases mosquitoes carry make them one of the deadliest creatures on earth, responsible for over 1 million deaths every year. Luckily, here in the U.S. we’re able to combat these pesky bugs with a professional mosquito control service like Mosquito Joe. Our franchisees are dedicated to spreading awareness about mosquitoes and the illnesses they cause as well as working to fight off mosquito populations in their local areas. MCAW brings professional mosquito control to light and we’re thankful for this opportunity to give back.

Beat The Bloodsuckers
This is Mosquito Joe’s sixth year participating in our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Franchisees had the opportunity to partner with a local blood bank in their area or with our philanthropic partner, Nothing But Nets. Mosquito Joe locations across the country joined with local blood banks donating 10% of new customer sales from that week to their blood bank of choice. This year we were able to donate over $7,000 and partner with 26 blood banks!

For the second year in a row, Mosquito Joe partnered with Nothing But Nets, a global grassroots campaign that was established in 2006. Since then, they’ve raised over $65 million to help deliver 12 million bed nets to families in need, along with other crucial malaria interventions like diagnostic treatments and training of healthcare workers. A mosquito net sent to someone in need is just $10; for every new Mosquito Joe customer signed during MCAW, a net was sent! This year our company raised over $24,000, sending 2,413 life-saving nets during Mosquito Control Awareness Week to those in need!

The Buzz!
Our amazing franchisees were out there rocking it in their local communities to spread awareness around the importance of mosquito control. Mosquito Joe locations were featured 131 times across the U.S. and secured 14 TV segments in just one week. We’re excited so many franchisees were able to further educate their communities on mosquito control, and how important it really is to keep our families and furry friends itch-free! Check out a few highlights below:

We’re very proud of our franchisees and so happy we were able to give back to these non-profit organizations by supporting the amazing work that they do through our 2018 Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Mosquito Joe continues to partner with Nothing But Nets through our ongoing MoJo Bites Back campaign. To support us in our mission, consider donating to our MoJo Bites Back campaign as we raise funds for malaria and bring awareness to malaria-stricken areas. It will only cost you $10 to send a net; make a difference for a family in need today!

Thanks to our participating franchisees, each blood bank that we partnered with, Nothing But Nets, and our AMAZING customers that helped make this year’s Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign the huge success that it was.

Pest Control Industry Update

At Mosquito Joe, we pride ourselves on being on the cutting edge of our field. This has allowed us to expand our brand and grow as a company. Here are some of the exciting things happening in our industry that have contributed to our success!

Growth Possibilities

The pest control industry has experienced a high growth rate recently and is anticipating even more in the months to come! Currently, the industry is expected to see 2.6% in growth from $13.4 billion to $15.3 billion by 2022. This is due to the rising amount of consumer awareness about the potential health risks of mosquitoes and other pesky pests. Here at Mosquito Joe, we’re invested in educating consumers on the importance of mosquito control and the steps they can take to prevent insect-borne diseases.

Recurring Revenue

One of the major advantages of the pest control industry is that it functions on a recurring revenue model. According to current statistics, the number of recurring customers is growing rapidly. Because Mosquito Joe markets our services as something that works best when done on a regular basis, this encourages customers to schedule their services in advance, which can ensure guaranteed revenue. Customers can also utilize pre-pay options which can ensure cash flow on the front end and guarantee income during the off-season for many seasonal business owners. These funds can be allocated toward marketing efforts or business expenses. Both options are great for franchisees.

Long-Term Customers

Pests are viewed by most homeowners as a nuisance, resulting in the willingness to do what is necessary to get the problem under control. After experiencing the benefits of the service, customers are likely to return for multiple seasons.

While pest control is typically seen as a residential service, a new kind of customer is creating the bulk of the growth in new customer acquisition. Commercial accounts and pest control, especially those in the food and hospitality industry, have always gone hand-in-hand because of federal regulations and local food safety guidelines.

MoJo Differentiators

There are a number of reasons to join the pest control industry, but there are even more reasons to join the Mosquito Joe team. Mosquito Joe has been recognized as #1 in category for Best of the Best Franchises and one the Fastest-Growing Franchises by Entrepreneur for multiple years. We promote a family and locally-owned business model whose top priority is making outside fun again for our communities.

Mosquito Joe Recognized by Leading Industry Publications as Top Franchise Opportunity for 2017

Mosquito Joe has been raising the bar in the pest control industry since it began franchising in 2013. Its unrivaled services make the outdoors fun again—the brand’s thorough sprays and backyard treatments create a strong barrier between families and mosquitoes. That’s why it’s no surprise that consumers across the country are increasingly relying on Mosquito Joe to rid their yards of pests. Especially as mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile and the Zika virus continue to pose a threat, demand for the brand’s services is at an all-time high. But that rise in demand isn’t limited to consumers—Mosquito Joe’s franchise opportunity is also growing at record breaking rates. And the franchising industry is taking note.

Mosquito Joe has been ranked number one in category and number 26 overall on Entrepreneur’s 2017 Franchise 500 list. The brand earned that spot through a combination of its affordable costs and fees, impressive size and growth, strong support, promising brand strength and financial strength and stability. After receiving nearly 1,000 applications, Entrepreneur recognized that Mosquito Joe’s franchise opportunity stood out as one of the best for the year ahead, especially in the maintenance services segment.

“We’re incredibly excited and honored to be ranked so highly on Entrepreneur’s coveted Franchise 500 list. As a corporate team, we’re constantly working to improve our systems for our franchisees, so it’s great to see that hard work being recognized,” said Kevin Wilson, Mosquito Joe’s CEO. “We’re going to use this ranking as a strong jumping off point for the new year—Mosquito Joe will build on the momentum Entrepreneur’s ranking gives us by continuing to welcome top tier franchisees into our system in communities across the country.”

Entrepreneur isn’t the only industry publication recognizing Mosquito Joe’s strong potential for growth in 2017. The brand’s franchise opportunity also earned the top spot on Franchise Gator’s list of the new year’s fastest growing franchises. Not only does the number one ranking signal that Mosquito Joe is experiencing rapid expansion, it also shows that the brand is creating an environment in which its franchisees can thrive.

It’s clear that Mosquito Joe’s existing local owners back up that claim. The brand was also named one of the top 200 franchises of 2017 by Franchise Business Review. This ranking differs from the Franchise 500 and Franchise Gator in that it’s determined based on feedback from existing franchisees. That means Mosquito Joe’s owners gave the brand high scores when it comes to franchisee satisfaction.

Heading forward into the new year, Mosquito Joe plans to build on the momentum provided by these coveted rankings. With plans to partner with even more franchisees in key development markets like Colorado and Mississippi in the first quarter of the year alone, the brand will continue to position itself as the leading pest control franchise. And with 170-plus units already successfully operating, it’s clear that the brand’s system is working.

“Our goal for 2017 is to continue working with top quality franchisee candidates. The passionate and dedicated local owners currently operating in our system are ultimately the reason we received such high ratings from Entrepreneur, Franchise Gator and Franchise Business Review. That’s a trend we want to continue,” said Angela Paules, vice president of marketing at Mosquito Joe. “We’re looking forward to expanding our footprint and growing in new territories throughout the new year.”

Women of Mosquito Joe: Tiffany Farmer

If there is one thing we have learned it is that there are many misconceptions about women in the pest control industry! So while we could write a blog post about the pest control industry and why women are a good fit for Mosquito Joe, we thought there were a few people who could do a better job. In our blog series the Women of Mosquito Joe, we highlight the incredible women that are a part of the MoJo family and why it is no longer a man’s world!

This month we chatted with Tiffany Farmer of Mosquito Joe of New Orleans. After speaking with a Mosquito Joe franchisee who just happened to be their neighbors, Tiffany and her husband Terry decided it was the perfect fit. Some say the mosquito is the state bird of Louisiana so Tiffany felt a strong urge to protect herself and her family, but also her community.

What is your role in the Mosquito Joe business?

My role in the business is running the day to day operations. I get the technicians ready and on their routes, then I take the calls and answer questions and sign customers up. You could say I do it all…except spraying 😉

How do you balance this with your family or home life?

The balance between home and work life is pretty easy. I work from home, so that makes it simple for me. I set a time of day when work is done and then I switch over to family. You have to find the right balance that fits for you, and thankfully Mosquito Joe is the perfect balance for us.

When considering opening your own business, why did you choose Mosquito Joe?

I choose Mosquito Joe because it didn’t feel like just another franchise, it felt like a family. To me, family is the most important thing so why not work with family and make a living? It’s really fun for us and was definitely the right choice.

There are often misconceptions around the pest control industry and in particular with women working in that industry (that it’s dirty, etc.); what are your thoughts on those?

I do not find the pest control business to be dirty. Everything from our van and the way our technicians provide the service is so well organized that it doesn’t FEEL like pest control.  This brand is awesome because no one likes mosquitoes, we get rid of them, and more importantly we get to make outside fun again for families.

We’re so proud Tiffany and Terry are a part of the Mosquito Joe family. If you would like more information about Mosquito Joe of New Orleans and their mosquito treatment services in Louisiana, be sure to check out their website and read more about what they offer. And if you’re interested in the Mosquito Joe franchise opportunity, we’d love to hear from you. You could be the next Woman of Mosquito Joe!

Franchisee Training

This week we are very excited to welcome our first group of 2016 franchisees to Mosquito Joe Headquarters for new franchisee training!  While many assume that things slow down for us after our corporate-owned Virginia Beach Mosquito Joe location wraps up service for the year, that’s not actually the case.  We are constantly working to serve and educate our franchisees (new and existing), so they can develop a strong business, and this week we’re opening the doors of MoJo University for another year.  No rest for the weary!

Some of you might be wondering, what is MoJo University?

Part of what sets Mosquito Joe apart as a franchise is its system of ongoing training and support.  MoJo University is a comprehensive, four-day training program at the corporate office in Virginia Beach, Virginia that all new franchise owners must attend and complete before opening for business.  This week launches the first training session for 2016 franchise openings. The course is designed to educate franchisees in all aspects of Mosquito Joe including operations and equipment, customer service, financial planning, and marketing.  Since no previous pest control experience is necessary to own a Mosquito Joe franchise, this training is crucial to getting new locations up and running. It’s just the beginning of the amazing support Mosquito Joe Corporate offers franchisees from day one.

Chris Whiteside, a new franchise owner from Newtown, Pennsylvania says, “I’m looking forward to my week of training, so I can begin to focus on the details around our business. Through the purchasing process, I knew I wanted a seasonal business, and the uniqueness of the brand and the untapped market in my area led me to Mosquito Joe. As I begin the process, I continue to be confident in our location and look forward to the experience.”

Joining Chris at training this week are Rachael Mann from Highland Park, Illinois, Whitney Mastropierro from Westhampton, New York, Steve Brock from Summerfield, North Carolina, and David and Dale Maginness from Overland Park, Kansas.  David Maginness opened his location, Mosquito Joe of East Johnson County, in 2015 but is coming through MoJo University again for a refresher with a year of service under his belt. This time he’s bringing his father, who is one of his technicians, to increase his skill-set as well.

MoJo University training sessions are also a great time for new franchisees to get to know our stellar corporate team and get all their questions answered about running a mosquito control business.  We’re excited to kick off this next year of training. If you’re interested in learning more about our training and support, please contact a franchise development representative at [email protected].
