The Mosquito Joe Million Dollar Club: Paul VanWagner

Mosquito Joe continues to be a leading brand in the mosquito control industry. We now have franchisees who’ve made over $1M and some approaching $2M in gross revenue this year! Once a franchisee reaches this milestone, they’re officially part of an elite group known as the Million Dollar Club (MDC). Mosquito Joe rewards franchisees for this exceptional achievement by coming together in Napa Valley, CA for a little R&R! Over the course of two days, franchisees collaborate amongst themselves, sharing best practices and success stories. It’s truly admirable to witness the knowledge shared and relationships built throughout the duration of this event. These franchisees have earned national recognition and deserve to be rewarded for the hard work they put into their businesses day in and day out. Congratulations to our 2018 Million Dollar Club members!

We could talk all day about what it takes to join this club, but who better to describe their journeys than the members themselves? Our blog series The Mosquito Joe Million Dollar Club visits with different franchise owners to talk about their franchising story. This week, we talked with Paul Van Wagner, owner of Mosquito Joe of Montgomery County. Paul joined Mosquito Joe in 2015. He currently owns 4 territories and is joining the Million Dollar Club for the first time this year. Check out our conversation with him below!

1) Why did you start looking into franchising, and why did you ultimately choose Mosquito Joe?

I was looking for a business for my son to get into that he could operate and grow with. And we wanted to find a business where we could help our community. Eliminating annoying, disease carrying insects helps everyone and our MoJo customers can make outside fun again!

2) What do you enjoy most about being a franchise owner?

I have been self-employed since I was 22 years old, so it’s in my blood. But the MoJo Franchise was highly recommended by a good friend and MoJo Zee, Kurt Godwin, and he was right on, as the Corporate support and culture of everyone in the company have been over the top. MoJo only uses the highest quality products and our customer service and communication with our customers is the best in our industry.

3) Who are the primary employees in your business and how do they contribute to your success?

The first season in 2015, my son, John, and I ran the business with one part time office staff and 4 techs. It was a real challenge as the business did much better than expected. I wanted to pull my hair out by September that first season. But it was a great way to learn the entire business and I would not change a thing now.

4) Describe your current business operation: how many employees, how many trucks, how many territories?

We hired an awesome office manager in 2016, Bari.  She runs the office and office staff. John is the operations manager and oversees the techs and support for all operations. We had 5 office staff and 21 techs for the 2018 season running 9 vans. We own 4 territories. We will always be fully staffed so we can offer the customer service our community deserves and expects.

5) What is one piece of advice you would offer to first year Mosquito Joe franchisees?

Learn it from the ground up. Learn everything you can so you will be the person training and teaching the staff the way you want them trained. The Corporate office can provide excellent training, but you may want to tweak some of that to fit your needs. Franchisees and all their staff should go to the training the Corporate office provides and reach out to existing zees for advice. Why reinvent the wheel! Much of our success is due to the support and advice we received from our good friends and MoJo Zees, Kurt and Melissa Godwin.

6) What is one piece of advice you would offer to someone just beginning their search for a franchise opportunity?

I cannot stress enough how important it was for us to have the support from the MoJo Corporate office and from other experienced MoJo Zees. This was invaluable to us. For anyone looking for a franchise opportunity, the MoJo brand is new/young enough to have exceptional growth opportunity, but old enough to also be the “Best/Top” brand in the outdoor pest control industry. I think MoJo is close to surpassing our top competitor who has been in business almost twice as long.

7) How did you feel becoming a member of the Million Dollar Club?

Making the MDC was awesome, it’s a goal we had set for our 3rd year and we just missed that, but we surpassed it in 2018 and the next goal will be 2 million in the next few years.

 8) Where do you see your Mosquito Joe business in the next 2-3 years?

We opened our last (4th ) territory in 2018 (we will only service our local community, Montgomery County, MD, so we can always provide exceptional customer service). I feel like MoJo is the “go-to” vendor for outdoor pest control in our area due to all the reasons that make us the best. We anticipate to continue our year over year growth and believe we will hit the 2 million mark in the year 2020. John and Bari will have more control of the business moving forward. The goal when we purchased the business was to provide an opportunity for our son to get into a business he could operate and help grow. It has turned into more than that, as it will also provide us with a supplement income over the coming years.

The Buzz About Our Branding

When considering the purchase of a franchise, a key element to explore is the company’s brand identity. Is there a consistent tone in the messaging? Are the use of colors, fonts and logos consistent across all platforms? Is it something you can be passionate about as a business owner? Although playful and fun, our brand and messaging are something we take great pride in at Mosquito Joe – it differentiates us from our competitors and helps us stand out in a flourishing pest control industry.

GET TO KNOW THE MOSQUITO JOE BRAND:

Our brand promise: Outside is fun again.

The Mosquito Joe brand is more than an outdoor pest control brand, it’s a lifestyle. By focusing on the benefits our services can give our customers, we can promise to make outside fun again for those who’ve become a stranger to their outdoor spaces due to mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. You can feel confident joining the Mosquito Joe family, proudly representing the brand and bringing endless outdoor fun to your local community.

Our typography and colors:

Choosing the colors and fonts to represent a brand is no easy task. Let our marketing efforts send the message for you with our fun, eye-catching colors. Our bright green and yellow help consumers know that we’re playful, fresh and clean, and aid in the messaging that your outdoor space can be too. A good font is the backbone of design. Our fonts are rounded and easy to read, helping to send a fun, to the point message to our audience.  The consumer’s outdoor space doesn’t need to be a dreary one, and our typography and color palette do a great job getting that point across.

Catchy slogans that express our personality:

Mosquito Joe knows that a good slogan is one of the best ways to draw attention to a marketing piece. Slogans reveal personality and help to set a realistic and fun tone of voice for our brand. We’re proud to have a witty team of slogan-generating experts always ready to brainstorm the funniest, giggle-worthy slogans in our industry. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Stop smacking yourself in the face.
  • Did you mean to donate blood on the way to the mailbox?
  • Your backyard, our battlefield.
  • Get inside quick. Then call us.
Letting images tell the story:

A picture says a thousand words, right? That’s definitely the case for the images we use here at Mosquito Joe. Our selected photography captures the imagination and helps tell our brand story. A plethora of Mosquito Joe marketing materials are filled with crisp, bright images of families, friends, kids and pets all experiencing the joy our services provide – an itch-free outdoor space.

Beat the Bloodsuckers: Mosquito Control Awareness Week 2018

Each year Mosquito Joe recognizes the importance of Mosquito Control Awareness Week through our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Our goal is to raise awareness in the communities in which we operate about the importance of mosquito control and the amazing work of non-profits like blood banks and Nothing But Nets. Although this week falls during one of our busiest months of the year, it does not stop our passionate franchisees from giving back in their communities. This year, National Mosquito Control Awareness Week (MCAW), recognized by the American Mosquito Control Association, fell on June 24th – June 30th, and it was a memorable week for Mosquito Joe.

Mosquitoes date back to over 100 million years, which means they’re not going anywhere anytime soon so it’s important to protect your families and furry friends. Not only are they nuisances who ruin your outdoor fun, but they can transmit dangerous diseases such as Zika, West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The diseases mosquitoes carry make them one of the deadliest creatures on earth, responsible for over 1 million deaths every year. Luckily, here in the U.S. we’re able to combat these pesky bugs with a professional mosquito control service like Mosquito Joe. Our franchisees are dedicated to spreading awareness about mosquitoes and the illnesses they cause as well as working to fight off mosquito populations in their local areas. MCAW brings professional mosquito control to light and we’re thankful for this opportunity to give back.

Beat The Bloodsuckers
This is Mosquito Joe’s sixth year participating in our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Franchisees had the opportunity to partner with a local blood bank in their area or with our philanthropic partner, Nothing But Nets. Mosquito Joe locations across the country joined with local blood banks donating 10% of new customer sales from that week to their blood bank of choice. This year we were able to donate over $7,000 and partner with 26 blood banks!

For the second year in a row, Mosquito Joe partnered with Nothing But Nets, a global grassroots campaign that was established in 2006. Since then, they’ve raised over $65 million to help deliver 12 million bed nets to families in need, along with other crucial malaria interventions like diagnostic treatments and training of healthcare workers. A mosquito net sent to someone in need is just $10; for every new Mosquito Joe customer signed during MCAW, a net was sent! This year our company raised over $24,000, sending 2,413 life-saving nets during Mosquito Control Awareness Week to those in need!

Mosquito Control Awareness Graphic 2018

The Buzz!
Our amazing franchisees were out there rocking it in their local communities to spread awareness around the importance of mosquito control. Mosquito Joe locations were featured 131 times across the U.S. and secured 14 TV segments in just one week. We’re excited so many franchisees were able to further educate their communities on mosquito control, and how important it really is to keep our families and furry friends itch-free! Check out a few highlights below:

We’re very proud of our franchisees and so happy we were able to give back to these non-profit organizations by supporting the amazing work that they do through our 2018 Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Mosquito Joe continues to partner with Nothing But Nets through our ongoing MoJo Bites Back campaign. To support us in our mission, consider donating to our MoJo Bites Back campaign as we raise funds for malaria and bring awareness to malaria-stricken areas. It will only cost you $10 to send a net; make a difference for a family in need today!

Thanks to our participating franchisees, each blood bank that we partnered with, Nothing But Nets, and our AMAZING customers that helped make this year’s Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign the huge success that it was.

Mosquito Joe Named a Top Low-Cost Franchise by Franchise Business Review

Mosquito Joe was identified by independent franchisee satisfaction research firm, Franchise Business Review, as one of only 80 franchises to qualify for its 2018 Top Low-Cost Franchises list. Brands on the list had to have high franchisee satisfaction and an investment of under $100,000 at the time their franchisees participated in Franchise Business Review’s franchisee satisfaction survey.

Franchise Business Review provides the only ranking of franchises based solely on actual franchisee satisfaction and performance. These rankings are published as part of the annual Guide to Today’s Top Franchises, as well as in quarterly reports throughout the year that rank the top franchises in specific sectors.

Thousands of franchisees representing nearly 150 low-cost brands participated in Franchise Business Review’s franchisee satisfaction survey between November 2016 and May 2018. Mosquito Joe’s franchisees were surveyed on 33 benchmark questions about their experience and satisfaction regarding critical areas of their franchise systems, including training and support, operations, franchisor/franchisee relations and financial opportunity.

Let’s hear from one of Mosquito Joe’s very own franchisees: “Melissa and I loved the branding, the business model, and the team. Everything was in place from day one and we knew there would be a need in our hometown. With Mosquito Joe, we’re making a living and changing the lives of people who could never enjoy the outside.” – Kurt and Melissa Godwin – Million Dollar Club Members – Mosquito Joe of Baltimore- Annapolis.

“Many people never consider buying a franchise because they think they can’t afford it. But what they don’t know is that there are a number of very solid business opportunities out there that can provide the satisfaction and perks of business ownership but don’t require a huge financial investment,” says Eric Stites, CEO of Franchise Business Review. “The low-cost franchises that made this year’s list are excellent options for those who are looking to make the leap to business ownership.”

How to Spread Some Cheer as a Business This Holiday Season

I think we can all agree there is a change in the air throughout the months of November and December. There is music playing everywhere, lights lining the streets, and an greater overall sense of generosity. We here at Mosquito Joe are incredibly lucky to have our families, roofs over our heads, and big holiday meals to bring us joy this season. Unfortunately, that is not the case for everyone. Charitable giving throughout the year is becoming more the norm for businesses (which is wonderful), but this time of year usually sees an increase in giving back from both individuals and companies alike. It may seem easier for large corporations with more resources to give back, but small businesses can make a huge impact on their local communities and lend a helping hand to those who need it most.

Just a little creativity and time can go a long way! Here are a few suggestions for ways that small businesses can give back this holiday season:

Mosquito Joe Maryland Food Bank

Food Drives

If you interact with customers on a daily basis, this is a great way to donate to a great cause and work together with your customers to do so! Mosquito Joe of Baltimore-Annapolis, for example, partners with the Maryland Food Bank each year to donate canned goods to local families during the holidays. On top of their own donations, Mosquito Joe will ask their customers to leave canned goods on their doorsteps during a set period of time, which they will pick up and drop off at the food bank.

Volunteer As a Team

Giving back doesn’t have to be in the form of money or food. Giving your time to a local organization is just as valuable. Having your employees volunteer as a team is a unique way to help those in need while encouraging team bonding! Consider volunteering at a local soup kitchen or food pantry, Habitat for Humanity, or gift-wrapping drive.

Donate a Portion of Sales

A simple way to make an impact with a local organization is to donate a portion of your business’ sales over a set period of time. If there is a charity near and dear to your business (or heart), choosing a recipient is fairly easy. If not, survey your employees to see which organizations mean the most to them. You can divide donations and even match those of your employees if you’re able.

Support The Troops

Many of our servicemen and women are away from their home and families during the holiday season. But there are a variety of ways you can reach out and let them know they are supported and loved from afar! Soldiers’ Angels Adopt-A-Family program allows you to donate to military families in need through gifts for the children and a grocery gift card so the family can purchase their holiday meal. You and your business can also join up with an organization like Operation Gratitude to host a collection drive for items to put into care packages that go to soldiers overseas.

Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots is a charity run by the United States Marine Corps that collects unwrapped toys throughout the months of November and December and distributes them to children in need throughout local communities. We hold a Toys for Tots drive here at Mosquito Joe Corporate every year. Visit the Toys for Tots website to find information on your local branch and how you can get involved in making a difference for a child in need this year.

Adopt a Family

Donating to charity can be difficult because you can’t usually see an immediate impact from your contribution. Adopting a family who needs assistance during the holidays is a wonderful way to see a personal and immediate result. You can make an even bigger impact by adopting a family as a business and contributing together! While there is no central organization responsible, simply Googling “adopt a family for the holidays” will bring up a list of organizations to partner with in your community. Many allow you to donate food, clothing, toys, and money.

While generosity throughout the holidays enhances the joy of the season, the giving doesn’t have to end come January. All of these ideas can be expanded beyond the holiday season to allow small businesses the opportunity to give back all year round. For example, Mosquito Joe teams up with Nothing But Nets all year long through our MoJo Bites Back campaign to provide mosquito-proof bed nets to families in Sub-Saharan Africa at great risk of malaria. You visit our donation page here for more information. It only takes $10 to send a life-saving net!

From all of us at Mosquito Joe, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season. May your days be merry and bright!

Make Outside Fun Again in Minnesota

Mosquito control in Minnesota?

Minneapolis, Minnesota – it’s probably not the first place that comes to mind when you think of summer fun or mosquito control. But it’s actually a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and families that love to spend time outside. The twin city to St. Paul, Minneapolis lies right on the Mississippi River, meaning the city is surrounded by lakes, wetlands, and creeks. It’s park system is nationally recognized as one of the best and contains the Chain of Lakes, which connects biking, running, and walking pathways for residents to enjoy the outdoors. It was voted by Runners’ World to be America’s sixth best city for runners, and it has the most golfers per capita of any city in the U.S. So, there’s no doubt that Minnesotans love taking advantage of the outdoors and being active!

If you’re looking for a franchise opportunity in Minneapolis and need some additional convincing to join the Mosquito Joe family, we’ve got you covered! Check out these reasons why Minnesota is a great market for the mosquito control industry:

  • The seasonality of our business is perfect for people who are looking for time off throughout the year to focus on other work or for free time. A short season also means that residents will take advantage of the warm weather by spending the summer months outdoors in their yards. This really encourages the need for mosquito control.
  • Major markets like Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs attract exactly our type of target demographic; single family homeowners, families, parents, pet-owners, and outdoor enthusiasts.
  • As evidenced by its park system, Minneapolis has a vibrant outdoor culture, meaning that residents in the area want to spend their free time outside. You can help them do that mosquito-free! There are also a lot of outdoor-oriented businesses in need of mosquito control services to prevent their customers from getting bit.
  • Mosquito Joe is one of the fastest growing franchises in the industry because of the recurring revenue model and opening of new locations across the country. It is also one of the lowest priced franchises in the outdoor services industry.
  • You will be a member of a franchise that exceeds industry averages. We are known for high satisfaction rates. Nothing feels better than knowing that you’re making a difference and that your customers are happy with the work you’ve done.

So, what’s in it for you?

  • You will finally know what it feels like to become a trusted partner of a business. You get to better the community, heighten summer fun, and help make outside fun again.
  • You will have the privilege of working outside and serving the community instead of being stuck behind a desk during the summer.
  • Join a team of good-natured people, and a feel-good environment. We like to have fun and make people smile here at Mosquito Joe.
  • Low investment means limited staff needed, and no retail location build out is necessary. You can run your business out of your home like many of our franchisees do already.
  • In addition to already low franchise costs, there are discount opportunities for applicable candidates, especially those in the military and law enforcement.
  • Our team of experts at corporate provides constant support and training in marketing, customer service, and finance. In other words, prior experience is not required! We will teach you everything you need to know to be successful.

When you decide to become a member of the Mosquito Joe family, you will be welcomed to the corporate headquarters located in Virginia Beach, where your questions will be answered, you’ll meet the corporate staff, tour the office, and get to know us as we get to know you. From there, you will attend MoJo University (our comprehensive training program), which will prepare you for all facets of your business prior to launch.

If you are interested in franchising with Mosquito Joe, in Minneapolis or elsewhere, please visit our Franchise Information webpage and contact our team today for more information! We’d love to get you on the road to joining the MoJo family!

A Salute to our Veteran Franchise Owners

Being based out of Virginia Beach, VA, we are surrounded by those who are serving or have served in the military on a daily basis. Many of our corporate employees are related to veterans or are veterans themselves, and about 20% of our franchise parters across the country are veterans as well. To honor their service and celebrate their success as entrepreneurs, we would like to highlight a few of our veteran Mosquito Joe owners and hear their stories.

Josh Lien, Mosquito Joe of Greater Austin (TX)

Josh Lien - Mosquito Joe of Greater AustinJosh is a prior US Army officer who served two tours in Iraq while on active duty.  After leaving the military, he still remained close to our military personnel working as a government contractor on training programs in both Iraq and Afghanistan.  He met his wife (also a veteran) at a salsa dancing event in Kabul, Afghanistan. Josh continued regular trips to Afghanistan after the birth of their first child in 2011, but when he received news that their second child was on the way, he elected to leave government contracting and open a Mosquito Joe franchise in Austin, TX, in order to spend more time with his budding family. He opened his first Mosquito Joe territory on the same day his 2nd child was born in April of 2014, and was joined by his parents, who moved from South Dakota to Texas during this same time to assist him with his business venture and to be close to their grandchildren.  Since then, he has expanded to four territories and experienced tremendous growth. Josh attributes his success to the work ethic and leadership skills he gained while in the Army, as well as to the support of his family.

Greg Polster, Mosquito Joe of Hilton Head and Coastal Georgia (SC and GA)

Greg Polster - Mosquito Joe of Hilton Head and Coastal GeorgiaGreg was born in Albuquerque as the son of an Air Force Vietnam veteran and went to college at Arizona State University. He joined the Army in 2003 and has since served in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Tanzania. As Greg transitioned from active duty, he looked for ventures through the well-known Boots to Business program, which helps service members explore the basics of starting their own business. Through a VetFran consultant he met at the program, Greg found Mosquito Joe and felt it was a great opportunity that allowed for flexibility and aligned with what he was looking for in a business. He’s currently in the Army Reserves and works as an Airborne Civilian Affairs Soldier. He is in his first season as a Mosquito Joe franchise owner and owns two territories.

Tim Sorrentino, Mosquito Joe of Camden and Gloucester Counties (NJ)

Tim Sorrentino - Mosquito Joe of Gloucester and Camden CountiesTim is a former infantry officer in the Army. He and his wife Kristen opened their Mosquito Joe location in the spring of 2017. Tim graduated from Rowan University with a BA in teaching, while simultaneously being commissioned as an infantry officer in the US Army. Serving part time in the army national guard and teaching for approximately four years, before being called to active duty in support of an Iraq deployment. Tim remained on active duty after the deployment where he served as a plans officer. He was then later deployed to Afghanistan to serve as a mentor to the Afghan Army. He obtained a Masters in Education Administration and an MBA from Villanova before separating from the army full time.

Robert Rummells, Mosquito Joe of West Richmond and the Peninsula (VA)

In 1984, Robert was living in Los Angeles playing semi-professional football for the San Fernando Valley Freelancers, part of the 18-team Valley League which played the High Desert League. Then, on January 14, 1988, Robert enlisted in the United States Army where he became an Army Ranger and was assigned to the 1st Ranger Battalion at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA. Robert retired from the US Army in March 2009 after a 22 year career that involved missions around the world in a variety of conflicts. Upon retirement, Robert also did two additional defense contractor jobs before working with Mosquito Joe. In his 5th season as a Mosquito Joe franchise owner, Robert and Christine own four territories and cover the areas of West Richmond and Northern Hampton Roads.

We certainly realize that protecting our neighborhoods from mosquitoes isn’t quite the same as defending our country, but we take great pride in helping veterans find new purpose in giving back to their community by using the same skill set the military gave them to own their own business. There are many other Mosquito Joe veterans not mentioned here, and we are honored to be partnered with all of them. We do participate in the VetFran program, which gives veterans $2,500 off the franchise fee. For more information on joining Mosquito Joe as a franchise partner, please visit our website and give us a call today!

Lou Schager Comes on Board as New Chief Operating Officer of Mosquito Joe

Development has been a primary focus for us since Mosquito Joe began franchising in 2012, aiming to become the top mosquito prevention franchise in the nation. By growing strategically in target growth markets where our unique service was in high demand and sparking further development with our high customer satisfaction, we now proudly have 234 Mosquito Joe locations in operation.

Amidst one of our most successful development years in the brand’s five-year history, we hired new Chief Operating Officer Lou Schager. Lou joins the franchise with more than 26 years of naval experience, overseeing operations, logistics, safety and security for more than 16,000 personnel across three bases as the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Oceana.

“I gained great insight through my leadership opportunities while serving in the Navy,” said Lou. “Placing as much emphasis on building relationships as on making informed, strategic decisions led to high-level operational performance. When I was transitioning out of the military, I wanted to find an organization I could connect with on a personal level. Mosquito Joe fits both of those so well for me because our brand helps families enjoy their outdoors while also making entrepreneurial dreams come true for our franchisees.”

Through exposure to the brand as a loyal customer, Lou understood the unique opportunity Mosquito Joe offers to both consumers and franchisees with its unmatched concept. By joining the team, Lou looks to improve the training process for franchisees across the board – whether just joining the team or looking at multi-unit expansion opportunities. This streamlined approach will help maximize our efficiency and quality of services, and expand future growth opportunities.

“As a company goes through a normal life cycle from a start up to an established franchisor, leaders like Lou are critical to creating strong organizational systems designed to support rapid growth,” said CEO Kevin Wilson. “It’s important for us to continue providing the best support in the industry to coach our existing franchisees toward operational excellence as we continue to expand into new markets nationwide.”

We’ve celebrated three strong quarters of development in 2017, with 67 new territory openings so far this year– expanding presence in both new and existing markets nationwide. Now, we are focused on development opportunities in Chicago, Denver and in key markets throughout the Northeast and California. With Lou onboard, we are well-positioned to get these new locations up and running quickly.

Welcome to the team, Lou!

The Mosquito Joe Million Dollar Club: Kurt and Melissa Godwin

2016 was the first year that some of our franchise owners made $1 million dollars or more in gross revenue.  As we like to say, they joined The Million Dollar Club. This was not only a big milestone for the Mosquito Joe franchise as a whole, but it was a tremendous victory for these business owners and the hard work they put in each and every day. Reaching the million dollar mark is an amazing achievement, one that has continued into 2017.The Million Dollar Club

We could talk all day about what it takes to join this club, but who better to describe their journeys than the members themselves? Our blog series, The Mosquito Joe Million Dollar Club, visits with different franchise owners to talk about their franchising story. This week, we talked with Kurt and Melissa Godwin, Owners of Baltimore-Annapolis. Kurt and Melissa were some of our first franchise partners, joining Mosquito Joe in 2013. They currently own 6 territories and are completing their second year as members of The Million Dollar Club. Check out our conversation with them below!

Why did you start looking into franchising, and why did you ultimately choose Mosquito Joe?

Million Dollar Club

We didn’t want to go it alone in business. We chose Mosquito Joe because we liked the product, we liked the branding, and we liked the corporate team that introduced us to the concept. We also liked that the business framework was set up and ready to go on day one.

What do you enjoy most about being a franchise owner?

We like being our own bosses and being in control of our destiny. Our decisions determine our success. But, we also very much enjoy employing other people and giving hard working people opportunities and chances for success that they may not have gotten other places.

Who are the primary employees in your business and how do they contribute to your success?

We have an office manager, a routing specialist, a tech ops manager, and 22 technicians. All serve vital parts of our business. Our office manager keeps the office staff organized and pointing in the right direction as well as motivated. Our routing specialist helps keep all our trucks moving, and organized as efficiently as possible. And our technicians, of course, are the face of the business in the field and critical to our success.

Describe your current business operation: how many employees, how many trucks, how many territories?

We are operating six territories with 11 MoJo vans. We have six full time employees and 22 part time employees.

What is one piece of advice you would offer to first year Mosquito Joe franchisees?

Don’t underestimate the amount of hard work required during the busy season. Make sure you have a partner or spouse who can either help or at least understand what demands will be required during the busy season. Plus, realize that in dealing with the public, there will always be difficult people. Do not let the 10% of people who complain let you forget about the 90% that are happy with the service. Respond to problems, but don’t let it bog you down emotionally.

What is one piece of advice you would offer to someone just beginning their search for a franchise opportunity?

Make sure to find the opportunity, the model, and the mindset that works for you. You need to be happy about what you’re doing and be passionate about the success.

How did you feel becoming a member of the Million Dollar Club?

Melissa and I were both ecstatic. Hitting a goal like the Million Dollar Club was a great milestone on the way to creating a great and successful business that will continue to thrive as it grows. I think it also validates the MoJo concept and helps us to mentor others that are new. I also believe the recognition of those who have made it helps to motivate others for higher performance.

Where do you see your Mosquito Joe business in the next 2-3 years?

We would like to continue growing our 6 territories and anticipate revenue in excess of $3 million operating 16-18 trucks, with a resultant increase in personnel, creating more employment opportunities for new people as well as advancement for our current and loyal employees.
