Be Your Own Boss & 2016 Resolutions

We all do it around the new year: we think about our life, where we are, and we start to take inventory of the places we could, or maybe want to, improve. A new year is a fresh start, a new beginning, and the perfect opportunity to make changes. These can be smaller and sometimes simple resolutions: eating healthier, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, complain less, or clean out the garage. But if the change or improvement you’re looking for is in your job or career and you’re looking for a way to be your own boss, Mosquito Joe may be the one to help you with your New Year’s resolution.

There are many different reasons you could be looking to make a business or work change for 2016. Maybe you’re an outdoors person stuck at a desk; Maybe you yearn for flexibility with your schedule, or more time with your family; Or maybe you are just ready to take that big step and go into business for yourself. Becoming a Mosquito Joe franchisee can be the perfect solution for your resolution. So, why franchise?

  • Minimizing Risk

When you invest in a franchise business you are buying an established, tested, and proven business model. This keeps you from making the mistakes commonly seen in startup businesses. Joining a proven system prevents you from reinventing the wheel and offers you the benefits of an established brand, the chance to start up quickly and the support of a corporate team – which takes us to our next reason…

  • Be in Business for Yourself, Not By Yourself

When you buy a franchise you are never alone. You are part of an established brand and a growing family, with ongoing support and training from the franchisor. Joining a franchise system gives you the opportunity to pick up the phone at any time and ask questions to the franchisor or even to other franchisees. You are purchasing experience and expertise, allowing you to focus on your business’ growth, sustainability, and success.

  • Set Yourself Up for Success

Business ownership offers you the opportunity to take control of your career, finances, schedule and future. You are your own boss. Work hard for yourself and you’ll reap the benefits, giving you the ultimate return on your investment.

Happy Holidays from Mosquito Joe!

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is almost over!  2015 has been a banner year for Mosquito Joe, and one we’ll be proud to look back on for years to come. Our second annual franchisee convention was a huge success, not to mention an outstanding Mosquito Control Awareness Week that brought awareness to mosquito control and help to local blood banks nationwide.  We claimed a slew of awards including Entrepreneur’s Top Franchises to Watch, Franchise Business Review’s Top Franchises, 1851 Franchise’s Best Franchise Website, and Franchise Business Review’s Top Franchises for Veterans to name a few.

And with success comes growth, right?  After only three years of franchising, we had 114 territories open across the country, up from 39 in 2014.  We were lucky enough to welcome new members of the corporate team that will only make the Mosquito Joe experience better for franchisees and customers.  We also brought new franchisees on board and expanded our reach to new territories.

Of course, none of this would be possible without our amazing franchisees, corporate staff, and customers.  We work to make outside fun again for families across the country, but being on the Mosquito Joe team makes working fun everyday.  So, thank you.  Wherever you are this time of year, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.  We can’t wait to see what 2016 has in store!

Franchise Training at MoJo University

Lots of people assume that things slow down for us after the mosquito control season ends for the year, but that’s not actually the case.  We are constantly working to serve and educate our franchisees (new and existing), so they can develop a strong business, and last week we had the pleasure of hosting yet another week at MoJo University.  For December, we had trainees that spanned from Michigan all the way to Louisiana. We had new franchisees from College Park, Maryland and Western Michigan get training under their belts, while other franchisees took the opportunity to send their new office managers through the program.

Part of what sets Mosquito Joe apart as a franchise is its system of ongoing training and support.  MoJo University is a comprehensive, four-day training program at the corporate office in Virginia Beach, Virginia that all new franchise owners must attend and complete before opening for business.  Last week hosted the second training session for 2016 franchise location openings. The course is designed to educate franchisees in all aspects of Mosquito Joe including operations and equipment, customer service, financial planning, and marketing.  Since no previous pest control experience is necessary to own a Mosquito Joe franchise, this training is crucial to getting new locations up and running. It’s just the beginning of the amazing support Mosquito Joe Corporate offers franchisees from day one.

Mosquito Joe of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill in North Carolina sent their new office manager, Anne Johnson to MoJo University for the week. With a background providing strategic services for nonprofits and private organizations and business,  she wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the training program, but says she was pleasantly surprised. “With no pest control experience, I was worried four days wouldn’t be enough to get me where I needed to be. I am still amazed at the amount of information that was taught and the skill with which it was presented. The corporate team was awesome, and I can’t wait to put all the excellent ideas to use in our 2016 season.”

MoJo University training sessions are a great time for new franchisees to get to know our stellar corporate team and get all their questions answered about running a mosquito control business. We’re excited to kick off this next year of training. What to Look for in a Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD)

You decide to seriously look into buying a franchise.  It’s a daunting leap to take, to say the least, but you power through the research of countless franchise companies and business models and finally narrow it down to your top list.  What now?  Before you sign any papers, you need to do some more digging.  This is a huge investment on your part after all.  You should know everything about the franchises you’re considering.  One essential step in that process is to review the Franchise Disclosure Document in detail.  It may not be your ideal Sunday afternoon activity, but it will provide you with the necessary information you’ll need to choose the correct franchise.

What is It?

The FDD is a 23-part document that reviews the franchisor’s history, the company structure, legal history, financial agreements and payment schedules, existing franchisees, and mutual expectations, among many other things.  The Federal Trade Commission requires that potential franchisees receive the FDD at least 14 days before signing an agreement.  While prospective franchisees are encouraged to review the FDD with an experienced lawyer, this may not be realistic for everyone.  Fortunately, franchise companies like Mosquito Joe include a walkthrough of the FDD with a franchise development representative as part of the sales process to ensure you understand the material in the document and have an opportunity to ask any questions.

Why Is the FDD Important?

The FDD is meant to protect potential franchisees by putting everything on the table.  Some documents are more transparent than others, but it’s important to painstakingly review each one.  This is your chance to dig through any dirty laundry, ask any questions about the franchise, and clear up points you don’t understand, so be diligent!  You don’t want something to slip by that might hurt you in the long run!

What Should You Pay Attention To?

Of course, you should thoroughly read each section of the FDD, but there are several items that warrant a little bit more attention.  These item numbers are based on the Mosquito Joe FDD and may vary slightly in other company’s documents.

  • Item 1 gives a detailed background of the franchise, its company structure, and overview of the industry.  This will give you a general idea of how the franchise has grown, what it values, and how it’s organized.
  • Items 3 & 4 review any litigation or bankruptcy history the company may have.  Any information in these sections should raise a red flag. It could indicate problems with that company’s system, both with the franchisor and the franchisees.
  • Items 5-7 outline the franchise fees, initial investment, and other deposits.  Perhaps the most important items to prospective owners, this section helps set financial expectations and gives a good idea of how much a particular franchise will cost both upfront and down the road.
  • Item 20 provides a list of all current and former franchisees along with details regarding franchise growth and turnover.  Asking current franchisees about their experience is one of the most accurate ways to evaluate a franchise.  A high turnover rate or lack of growth may be red flags as well.

The FDD can be an intimidating step to owning a franchise, but don’t underestimate its importance.  A good Franchise Disclosure Document will give you all the information you need to make a well-informed decision.  Remember, Mosquito Joe makes the process a little bit easier by reviewing our FDD with each prospective franchisee in a one-on-one meeting before any contract is signed.

Mosquito Control Questions Got You Down?

As you’re researching franchise opportunities, and specifically the mosquito control industry, we know there are often questions that go along with an industry with which you might not be familiar. The mosquito control industry may not even be one that you’ve considered because well, we don’t all have mosquito or pest control experience. But don’t fret, we have good news for you.

There are many benefits to the Mosquito Joe system and one of them is that you don’t need any pest control experience. When you join the Mosquito Joe family, you get all the mosquito control training you need right here at MoJo Headquarters. Pretty awesome, right? Our system offers franchisees the benefits of our established brand and the ability to start up quickly. Because you don’t have to “invent the wheel,” you can focus on your strengths and skills as an entrepreneur since we have solutions in place to recruit and service customers. (Not to mention the team we have in place with over 80 years of combined experience in business, operations and marketing.) As you start looking into a mosquito control business opportunity, some of your most frequently asked questions are also frequently asked questions from our customers. So here are a few answers to get your research started.

  • What products do you use?
We use two primary products in our mosquito treatment. Our main barrier spray products use synthetic forms of pyrethrins called pyrethroids. Pyrethrins are the natural byproduct of the Chrysanthemum flower. Synthetic pyrethroids have a similar chemical structure as the pyrethrins, and are used in numerous commercial products such as household insecticides, pet shampoos and sprays, and even lice shampoos. The products themselves are water-based, mixed in water and will not harm plants. We also use a natural garlic spray, similar to the garlic in your kitchen but more strong and potent. We use this product around ponds, vegetable gardens, flowering shrubs and flowers, so as not to harm aquatic life and pollinators. All products are EPA approved.
  • What if it rains after my yard has been treated?
As long as your yard has had adequate time to dry after the application of your treatment (approximately 30 minutes), rain should not impact the effectiveness of your mosquito control service. However, our MoJo Guarantee ensures that if you are not completely satisfied with the effectiveness of our barrier spray services, we will return to your yard to re-spray your property and ensure you are mosquito-free until your next scheduled service.
  • But my city has a truck that comes around and sprays, why do homeowners need this service?
The Mosquito Joe van works a little differently than that city truck! A city mosquito truck sprays a dense fog hoping to eradicate adult mosquitoes. Their service can only reach mosquitoes in close proximity to the truck. Our technicians are trained to provide a custom treatment for each individual property or situation. They will walk your property each visit and treat it with a methodology specific to your yard.

As we said before, these questions are just a few that you’ll start to explore while you’re researching the MoJo opportunity. Owning a Mosquito Joe provides the independence of running your own business with the strong foundation of guidance and support from an established corporate office. Mosquito control is also a fast growing and emerging industry – one that will make you the neighborhood hero!

There are a couple of great reasons to join Mosquito Joe before the end of 2015, too. You can meet our fast-growing group of franchise partners at our Annual Convention in February and learn from their experience. You can also be trained and ready to showcase your new business in home shows as these typically take place early in the year and are a great way to get customers and build brand awareness.
