Charting the Course to Our 2016 Annual Convention

With our 2016 Annual Convention coming up, now is a great time of year to take a look back at how far we’ve come as a business.  From a small Mom and Pop mosquito control business in Virginia to a national franchise company, Mosquito Joe has really made a name for itself over the past three years with 113 territories open in 26 states.  Our Convention is a fun and productive chance for Mosquito Joe franchisees, Corporate staff, and outside vendors to meet and kick off the new year with a bang.  This is our opportunity to discuss the peaks and valleys of the previous year, brainstorm for the coming season, and of course, have some fun!  And since the sunshine brings out our best ideas, we’ll be heading down to Florida for the 2016 event.  We’ll hear from all of our franchisees, learn from industry experts, and give out a few awards along the way.  While we can’t wait for next week, here is a quick look back at the past couple of years to appreciate how far we’ve come.

1st Annual Convention 2014 2014 Mosquito Joe Convention Group posed on the stairs.

2013 was Mosquito Joe’s first year as a franchise company, opening 15 territories in 10 states.  Not bad!  The 2014 event was shrouded in nerves, not only because this was our first Convention, but because Virginia Beach was forecasted to have six inches of snow!  Some of you snow-bunnies may laugh, but that amount of snow is unheard of in Virginia and brings everything to a standstill.  Nevertheless, the weather cooperated, and we had a wonderful weekend filled with excitement, ideas, and go karts!

2nd Annual Convention 2015 2015 Mosquito Joe Convention Group

Last year’s Convention was so exciting because of our company’s tremendous growth in its second year as a franchise.  We jumped from 15 territories in 10 states to 39 territories in 21 states!  The event theme was Making Waves in 2015 as we brought everyone together to assess the previous year and collaborate on great ideas for the following year.  As usual, we learned and laughed with speakers, welcomed new faces to the MoJo family, and presented standout awards to several franchisees.

3rd Annual Convention 2016

unnamed (1)As we’ve said again and again, 2015 was our best year to date.  We had 113 territories open in 26 states, completely blowing our first two years out of the water.  Speaking of water, our theme this year is Charting the Course.  With a few years under our belts now, we want to make this the best Convention yet!  We’ll be welcoming over 20 vendors who assist in our day-to-day operations from marketing and graphics to operations and product sales.  There will also be several breakout sessions throughout the course of the event to allow franchisees the opportunity to meet in smaller groups and learn about specialized topics like grassroots marketing and mosquito control technology.  Of course, we’ll have our annual awards dinner to recognize stellar franchisee performances from the past year too.

If you want to be involved in next year’s Convention, take a look at our Franchise page for more information on how you can become a Mosquito Joe franchise owner.

Women of Mosquito Joe: Kate Kimpton

If there is one thing we’ve learned it’s that there are many misconceptions about women in the pest control industry! So while we could write a blog post about why women are a good fit for Mosquito Joe, we thought there were a few people who could do a better job. In our blog series the Women of Mosquito Joe, we highlight the incredible women that are a part of the MoJo family and why it is no longer a man’s world!

This month we chatted with Kate Kimpton of Mosquito Joe of Northwest Houston.  While her husband Paul helps with the business, Kate runs the day-to-day operations.  She also takes care of bookkeeping, marketing, and occasionally spraying in the field.  Five kids and two English Mastiffs certainly keep her busy around the clock, but Kate has learned to balance work and play as she enters her second year with Mosquito Joe.  She even has her kids help out with the business and uses her four-legged friends as adorable MoJo billboards when possible.

What motivated you to get involved with Mosquito Joe?

Kate: I was motivated to get into franchising by a desire to have my own company. Mosquito Joe appealed to me for several reasons: the ethics, the light-hearted humor, and the well thought out business model.

What’s your typical day like during the season?

Kate: Busy!  During the busiest time, I have another person in the office with me.  Sometimes there are three of us speaking to customers, quoting, keeping the books, working with technicians, keeping up on supplies, and reaching out to the community.

Why is Mosquito Joe business a good fit for women?

Kate: Well for starters, you are your own boss. You have down time during the year, which is great for spending time with the kids. For myself, I love showing my kids what it means to own your own business and what hard work is all about and the rewards it comes with. It is a great lesson.

There are often misconceptions about the pest control industry, in particular with women working in that industry.  What are your thoughts on those?  How do you find them to be true or untrue?

Kate: There is a big difference between the image of a guy crawling around in a nest of spiders and what we do. I don’t work in the field, but I can say that pest control is all about keeping our families safe. The majority of our customers are women, and they are mostly concerned with being outside and not worrying about their kids. I can relate to that. As the applicator, I can also answer all their questions.

Thanks Kate!

We’re so proud Kate is a part of the Mosquito Joe family. Franchise Business Review Top Franchises 2016

When we started franchising three years ago, we had a goal to become the leading name in mosquito control. With all the growth and success we’ve experienced, not only have we accomplished that goal, but we feel like we’ve done that with our next goal always at the forefront of our minds. We wanted to grow while creating a company that people truly enjoy and creating a culture that centered around our franchisees.

FBR-winnerThis week, we got some great news that makes us even more excited for things to come this year. We are very excited to announce that Mosquito Joe has made Franchise Business Review‘s annual Top Franchises of 2016 list. Of all the lists we’ve made this one is important to us. Why? Because this list is the highest ranked franchises based on franchisee satisfaction. That’s right, it’s ranked by those who work with us everyday…our franchisees.

We know it’s a great business opportunity, but hearing that our franchisees are as happy as we are is the icing on the cake for us. Mosquito Joe gives you a great franchise opportunity in a fast-growing industry, providing a service that benefits your community and makes you feel good about your business, all while offering you the flexibility of a seasonal business. Our seasoned leadership team has over eighty years of franchise experience, and they’ve always got your back. But, don’t take our word for it. Taking the Leap to Business Ownership

New Years Eve has come and gone.  Resolutions were made, some already broken, and the whole year is stretched out in front of you.  Hopefully any entrepreneurial resolutions you made are still intact.  If you’re reading this, odds are that you’re at least considering owning your own business whether it be a franchise or a stand-alone operation.  While we hope you continue to research and eventually join the wonderful team of Mosquito Joe franchisees, we understand that taking the leap to business ownership is scary to say the least, especially if it’s your first time.  It’s a long road between making the initial decision and opening doors for business.  Use these tips to get started and make the process a little smoother.

Just do it.

I don’t mean that as in just buy a business.  That’s not a good idea.  I mean just do it as in just start somewhere.  You can spend the next decade going back and forth on whether or not to buy a business.  The research and decision process is a lot of work and can be discouraging to a lot of people, so take it one step at a time.  Start by Googling “Tips for First Time Business Owners” or “Things Every First Time Business Owner Should Know.”  The results will just graze the surface, but will help get you closer to a final decision.

Evaluate your budget.

One of the least enjoyable parts of the process should be done first.  A simple net worth assessment, comparing your assets and liabilities, will determine where your financials lay.  From there, you should have an idea of how much capital you are comfortable investing.  As you look at specific business opportunities, you can further adjust this number.  But to start, you should create a financial benchmark for yourself .  This will also help you narrow down options throughout your research.

Narrow your focus.

Taking advantage of every opportunity, while usually good advice, is not necessarily beneficial in this case.  Remember how I said you can spend a decade deciding whether or not to buy a business?  Well, you can spend even longer lost in research about which business is best for you.  To limit time spent in the research phase, first understand your own interests and passions.  Your business is far less likely to succeed if you’re not fully invested in it.  Are you interested in home services?  The food industry?  Retail?  Would you prefer a year-round business to a seasonal business?  Do you want to start your own operation or join a franchise with a built-in support system?  The options are endless, but you probably already have an idea of what you’d like to do.  Start there, and look into business opportunities that suit your interests.

Know your strengths and weaknesses.

Certain businesses are more suitable to certain personalities and skill sets than others.  A restaurant owner probably thrives in a fast-paced, high-stress, creatively-challenging environment.  Contrastingly, the owner of a financial advisement firm probably enjoys an analytical and systematic setting.  In order to choose the right business for you, you first have to honestly evaluate yourself.  What do you enjoy?  What are you good at?  What are your weaknesses?  Your business will be more successful the more it’s in tune with your strengths and interests.  This process will also help you find others who can compensate for your weak points when shaping your team.

Get used to asking questions.

At every phase of this journey, you will have what feels like an endless list of questions.  Financials, regulations, supplies, and hiring staff are just a fraction of the things you’ll have to figure out.  The benefit of buying a franchise is the built-in support system provided by the franchisor.  Mosquito Joe, for example, has a wide web of personnel and resources ready to help you from the moment you express interest in our business to the second you sign the agreement.  Whether you are looking into a franchise or a stand-alone business, do yourself a favor and find the answer to every question you have.  There are no stupid questions when it comes to your own investment, and you will thank yourself later.

We might be a little biased, but we encourage all aspiring entrepreneurs to look into owning a franchise because it offers a great opportunity to be a business owner, without doing it alone.  Mosquito Joe provides support and training, a recurring revenue system, and a low initial investment – the perfect formula to ease the transition from first time business owner to thriving entrepreneur.  If you’re interested in the Mosquito Joe franchise opportunity, please visit our franchise page to learn more and request information.
